Title Meeting to discuss the idea of a course on technology
Date 25-09-2004
Time 03:00 pm
Place 3354 K.R.Road
Agenda
To discuss the possibility of offering a course that presents a perspective of technology (and in this case IT, since we are in the IT city) that goes beyond the technical and weaves in the social, cultural, political, economic contexts that interact with technology.
Description
In one of our meetings, where we talked about student projects, one idea that came forth was the possibility of offering a course on technology, possibly modelled as a lecture series, outside the purview of existing universities and institutions. As part of this course, the idea was to challenge the dominant context-less, technology-as-solution perspective of technology (in the case of Bangalore, IT is seen this way).

This meeting is being called to take forward that idea. How should this course be modelled? How do we get students and faculty at local universities interested in this? Who will teach the course? Reading material?

Today, IT/engineering students pick up IT/engineering skills, sociologists study cultural/social impacts of technology, law students study/examine the legal implications of technology (copyright/piracy/IP for example), artists/designers use technology as tools in their line of work, businessmen aggressively sell/push technology, and so on .. Can this be a course that might bridge these schizophrenic divisions and bring in these varied perspectives under the same roof? Thus, while one of the primary targets of this course are IT/engineering students, perhaps the course should rope in students from across disciplines, if only to facilitate an exchange of ideas, discussion across disciplines.

Closely tied in with this is also the idea of "relevant" projects that students can undertake. Perhaps we can have students undertake field visits -- to more directly understand impacts of technology (in good and bad ways) rather than just read/discuss. Perhaps these field visits will also impel them to undertake projects that are more tuned in to local contexts and local needs.

If this idea interests you, and you would like to help take this idea forward, please join on Saturday. If you cannot come, but are interested in this topic, please share your ideas. There will definitely be follow-up meetings on this topic, and we hope you can take part then.
